The Feedback Loop is an interesting concept from Ray Dalio’s book titled “Principles.” In this book, Ray discussed how harsh feedback can lead to incredible learning and success.
Success is a process. In fact, it’s often a painful process where you try something new, fail, learn and then move forward. Once a cycle is over, you go through the next loop. The way you react to every loop in the process will determine if you will come out successful or not.
What does this mean?
Failures, mistakes and negative feedback are all part of the process.
As a business coach, I’ve had the pleasure of working with some of the best business leaders across Australia. I’ve noticed that elite business owners have one thing in common. They see mistakes as a necessary part of growth. They understand that failure is a part of the process.
Consider Bill Gates. He and some friends developed Traf-O-Data to record traffic information that government agencies and civil engineers can use to improve infrastructure developments and similar projects. It initially felt like a great concept - but it failed miserably. Did this stop Gates from moving forward? No, it didn’t. Although Traf-O-Data was a big failure, it provided Gates with the experience to create the first line of Microsoft products that turned into a huge success in the end.
James Dyson is another example. He spent years building more than 5,000 prototypes before he invented the Dyson vacuum. Imagine if he stopped after the first 100 prototypes failed.
This is the mindset of successful entrepreneurs. They don’t see mistakes as a dead end. They see it as an opportunity to learn what went wrong so they can fix it. Their relentless approach to overcoming roadblocks allows them to refine their skills, processes and capabilities.
So if your sales strategy isn’t working or yielding results, treat it as an opportunity to take a hard look at what is happening in order to discover something new. It may not be an issue about the product offer or service. You might be targeting the wrong market. Or your messaging is flawed.
Have a mindset of learning from experiences so you can evolve and thrive despite multiple setbacks in your business.
To develop the mindset of turning mistakes into opportunities, you need to root your belief in the concept of the “feedback loop.” Ray Dalio believes that growth does not follow a linear path. It’s a series of loops where each one takes you through a 5-step process.

Having clear goals - set a target to aim for.
Experience pain and identifying problems that might compromise the fulfilment of the goals.
Diagnosing problems and the root causes.
Designing plans to get around the problems
Doing what is necessary to turn the designs into results.
Dalio explains that when you set a goal, it’s natural to encounter problems as you try to reach it. To overcome the problems keeping you from achieving your goal, you need to embrace that struggle or failure. Don’t think of it as a dead end. Treat as it an intuitive signal that it is time to identify the root cause of the problem before proceeding to diagnosis. Learn from it (design a better way) so you can do better once you try again.
That’s how high-performing entrepreneurs deal with failure. Using the concept of the feedback loop will help your business grow continuously despite going through setbacks.
Changing your mindset is not enough to bring continuous growth in your business. You need to train the rest of your team so they can develop the same mindset as you.
As the business leader, it’s up to you to foster the right culture that’ll empower your team to bring sustainable growth and development. Remember, you can’t do everything yourself. At the same time, there are issues and problems that only your team may be aware of.
This is why it’s important to empower the team to identify and fix problems themselves. The most successful companies are supported by a capable team who can face mistakes without fear of punishment. They are empowered enough to celebrate failures as opportunities to grow.
Fostering this mindset in everyone would encourage innovation. It’ll lead to a problem-solving attitude that’ll keep the company moving forward no matter what problems arise.
Encourage your team to identify bottlenecks in the workflow. If there are inefficiencies in the process, let your team feel empowered and supported enough to raise their voice to point it out. Once your team is comfortable acknowledging mistakes, it’s easier to train them to proactively solve problems instead of getting stuck on failures.
I understand that a mindset shift is not always easy to do. I’ve worked with many entrepreneurs who struggle to change their mindset because they’re hardwired to strive for excellence.
How did they learn to embrace mistakes?
By striking a balance between perfection and rapid iteration and adaptation. You have to realise that even high-performing entrepreneurs know that perfection isn’t realistic. It’s a good standard to encourage constant improvement. But in reality, it’s hard to achieve and you need to be okay with that.
You need to view perfection as the ideal goal but don’t let it drive you into obsession. Use it as an encouragement to experiment and adapt until you reach your goal. Every time you fail to reach perfection, ask yourself one question.
How can this problem or challenge be turned into a gift or an opportunity?
Take the lesson then try again. If the cycle continues, keep your actions swift and efficient so you can keep improving. When you’re committed to continuous improvement, you can set up a business that can scale efficiently and successfully.
The feedback loop is an incredible concept that teaches you to embrace mistakes and failures because it opens opportunities for continuous improvement. It allows you to build an empowered team that can be confident in identifying and solving issues. By reframing the role of mistakes in your business, you can navigate obstacles and take your business towards sustainable growth.
This puts you in control over your business no matter what it’s going through. As a business leader, you need to take control of the growth trajectory so you can make the right decisions that will lead you to ultimate growth and success.
