My Qualifications & Experience

As a Chartered Accountant and prior to launching Butler & Co Advisory, I accumulated over a decade of experience working across three different firms spanning the three 'tiers' of the accounting profession; a small boutique firm, a mid-tier firm and the ‘big 4’ firm – Pricewaterhouse Coopers. During my career, I have provided strategic advice to corporates and regulators involved in ultra-high stakes "bet-the-company" style litigated matters. My clients included major banks, regulators, and ASX listed companies (advising to board level in some cases).

While my certification as a Chartered Accountant showcases my training, I believe the quality of a coach should be determined by their results.

My clients have reported increased sales growth, higher profits, smoother day-to-day operations, and the ability to take holidays without worrying that everything will fall apart while they're away from the office.

On a personal note, I come from a family of small business owners and feel I was destined to enter the accounting profession from a young age. I recall sitting in my parents' accountant's office at the age of five, reviewing financial statements and walking through the numbers. The way my father hung on every word the accountant said seduced me into the profession. I wanted to become a strategic partner and adviser to the clients I served and be equipped with the skills needed to go into business for myself.

My obsession with business and entrepreneurship started early in my life, and throughout my formative years, I've seen the ups and downs of business and the impact they have.

It came as no surprise to me that working my way up the ranks of traditional accounting firms left me feeling unfulfilled. Small business is just entrenched too deeply into my DNA and so in 2018, Butler & Co Advisory was born.

I believe I was born to coach.

Just after I started my coaching practice, I had an epiphany: I was born to coach.

I've been coaching all my life. Until that moment I hadn't been able to label it. Now I had crystal clear insight.

I now understood what Steve Jobs meant in this quote, that only after you're there, can you then connect the dots:

“You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.

So, you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.

You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever."

My Core Beliefs and Opinions About Business and Business Coaching

I believe in "teaching a man to fish"

I firmly believe in the proverb, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."

While the origin of this quote is debatable, its meaning is clear - education and empowerment lead to long-term success. Unlike consultants who provide solutions based on their expertise, often leaving their clients dependent on them, my coaching approach is to teach you what you need to know so that you can make informed decisions about your future. Rather than giving you the fish, I'll teach you how to fish.

For example, you don’t need to become a master in accounting, marketing or human resource management in order to be successful. You do, however, need to be aware of certain best practice and mental models relating to those areas – and know how and when to apply them to your specific opportunities and challenges.

I believe in the Socratic Method of teaching and coaching

I follow the Socratic Method of teaching and coaching, asking questions and providing feedback to help you explore your options and find your own answers. As a coach, my role is to help you figure out the answer that is right for YOU.

I believe in fostering professionals' freedom and independence

I believe in fostering professionals' freedom and independence, because if your business isn't supporting your life, just what is it supporting?

I believe that selling can be a service to society

I also believe that selling can be a service to society, and that many people struggle in business because they associate sales with pushy tactics. However, the truth is that we are all salespeople - whether we're trying to persuade a three-year-old to eat their vegetables or asking someone out on a date.

If the truly great professionals and business leaders don't embrace sales and marketing, exactly who else will?

Having studied selling professional services, I've learned that the exact same techniques can be used either manipulatively or helpfully, depending on who you intend to serve: yourself or your client. With my coaching, you'll learn how to use sales techniques to benefit both yourself and your clients.
