The Be-Do-Have Model: Unlocking Success in Business and in Life

January 05, 20247 min read

In a world full of success stories and high achievers, we often wonder: What's the secret behind their accomplishments?

As we kick off the new year in 2024, the question remains: What sets apart the most successful entrepreneurs and leaders, propelling them toward their dreams?

In this week's post, we explore the 'Be-Do-Have' model—a game-changing framework that could redefine your path to success. Let's dive into a straightforward approach that holds the potential for transformative results.

Dismantling Common Misconceptions

We've all crossed paths with individuals firmly convinced that their road to happiness and success hinges on acquiring specific possessions or achieving particular statuses. It's a common sentiment: "If only I could secure that promotion, that dream house, or amass a significant fortune, then I would finally find contentment."

However, both life experiences and extensive scientific research on happiness point us in a different direction.

If success were merely a matter of accumulating material wealth, we'd expect every millionaire to epitomise happiness, and every business owner witnessing soaring profits to be in a state of perpetual contentment.

Yet, we often hear stories of magnates who, despite their vast fortunes, grapple with an overwhelming sense of emptiness.

Consider the tale of a CEO, worth a staggering $750 million, who found himself relying on anti-depressants simply because he hadn't breached the coveted $1 billion mark.

Why does this happen? The answer lies in their adherence to the 'Have-Do-Be' model (rather than the 'Be-Do-Have' model I introduced above).

They believed that amassing wealth and possessions would grant them the capability to undertake certain actions that would, in turn, lead to their happiness.

The Mindset Shift: Understanding Deep Transformation

Transitioning from the 'Have-Do-Be' model to the 'Be-Do-Have' framework demands a profound transformation of one's mindset. It entails a shift inward, embracing a deeper understanding that external achievements, while significant, often prove fleeting, whereas personal development endures.

The prevailing conditioning for many of us adheres to a reverse pattern: "Once I possess X, I can engage in Y and become Z." Unfortunately, this perspective frequently propels us into an unending pursuit that leaves us devoid of genuine fulfillment.

However, it's essential to clarify that aspiring to attain great accomplishments or possessions is not inherently flawed. Instead, the emphasis lies in the sequence. Initiate your journey with personal growth, and you'll soon discover that the subsequent actions and acquisitions have a remarkable tendency to exceed your initial imaginings.

Why Does It Matter for Business Owners?

In the pursuit of success, every accomplished business leader acknowledges the pivotal role of mindset. They don't stumble upon achievement; instead, they meticulously cultivate a mindset that not only attracts opportunities but also strengthens their resilience and fosters continuous growth. It is within the 'Be-Do-Have' model that this triumphant mentality finds its most eloquent expression.

For entrepreneurs aspiring to build thriving businesses, these three steps (in this order) stand at the core:

1. BE a successful business owner

I'm not endorsing the "fake it till you make it" approach here – that rarely proves effective.

The concept of "Being" signifies a profound shift at the level of your identity.

It involves seeing yourself as a successful business owner, immersing yourself in the sensations of being one, and cultivating the very mindset that defines a thriving business owner.

Essentially, it's about assuming the role of a successful business owner right from the start.

This requires honing and nurturing a set of qualities characteristic of successful business owners:

Qualities such as confidence, resourcefulness, decisiveness, integrity, generosity, self-discipline, determination, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to learning.

It's these very qualities that will empower you to take action and "Do".

2. DO the things that a successful business owner does

Starting from the foundation of your identity and the mindset of a successful business owner, it becomes imperative to ask: What actions define a successful business owner?

A valuable approach is to take a closer look at accomplished business owners to discern precisely what they do.

Among the business owners I've had the privilege of working with over the years, several common actions consistently emerge:

  1. Effective Time Management: They exhibit exceptional organisational skills and productivity, recognising the importance of delegation as a tool for efficiency. They set clear boundaries and frequently say "no", in order to say "yes" to the things truely necessary in order for them to achieve their goals.

  2. Team Leadership: Successful business owners establish systems that guide their employees, implementing a structured team meeting routine in away that advances both the business and the careers of the individuals that comprise it. Moreover, they excel in the art of hiring and recruitment.

  3. Profit Generation & Cash Flow Management: Proficiency in revenue generation through effective marketing and sales strategies is a hallmark. They also display a knack for comprehending financial data and closely monitoring Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

It's crucial to note that all these skills are acquirable through learning and practice.

3. HAVE the things that a successful business owner has

A thriving business is one that grants its owner the life they desire. This encompasses:

  1. Financial Freedom: Providing the means to indulge in the things they hold dear.

  2. Quality Time: Offering the precious resource of time to relish the fruits of their success with loved ones, family, and friends.

  3. Achievement and Fulfillment: Evoking a profound sense of pride in the creation of a flourishing and profitable enterprise.

Leaders and the Be-Do-Have Model: A Perfect Symphony

Consider some of the titans in their respective domains. Visionaries such as Elon Musk, Steve Jobs, and Richard Branson didn't embark on their journeys armed with an exhaustive checklist of possessions they wished to accumulate. Instead, they commenced their quests with a profound sense of vision, a state of being that guided their endeavors.

Elon Musk's unwavering commitment to securing the future of humanity gave rise to groundbreaking ventures like Tesla and SpaceX.

Steve Jobs didn't harbor ambitions of amassing a vast tech empire from the outset. His journey commenced with a vision of who he aspired to become—an innovative force in the world.

Richard Branson's innate entrepreneurial fervor propelled him to conceive and nurture the Virgin Group, a testament to his visionary pursuits.

Applying the Be-Do-Have Model Daily

You need not await a grand occasion to put this model into practice. Begin with small, everyday steps:

  1. Morning Ritual: Kickstart your day by centering your attention on a trait you aspire to embody. It might be positivity, determination, or empathy. Allow this characteristic to steer your actions throughout the day.

  2. Goal Crafting: When charting your objectives, don't commence with a mere inventory of desires. Instead, introspect on the person you must evolve into to realise these goals. Then, channel your energy into the actions that such an individual would readily undertake.

  3. Personal Evolution: Take a moment to connect with your prevailing emotions. Are you radiating confidence and acceptance, or do you frequently find yourself swamped by anger and frustration? Seek external feedback, as understanding how others perceive you can yield valuable insights into areas ripe for personal growth.

Wrap Up

The Be-Do-Have model wields transformative potential, challenging deeply entrenched convictions and accentuating the paramount importance of personal growth. In a world often fixated on equating success solely with material possessions, this model serves as a poignant reminder that authentic accomplishment takes root from within.

As you embark on your entrepreneurial journey, allow the Be-Do-Have philosophy to serve as your guiding beacon. It pledges not merely success but a voyage imbued with profound purpose, unceasing fulfillment, and enduring contentment.

Once your inner being aligns harmoniously with your aspirations, the path forward becomes distinctly illuminated, with the desired outcomes following naturally.

By wholeheartedly embracing this model, you're not merely pursuing outcomes; you are meticulously sculpting an enhanced version of yourself, laying the foundation for genuine gratification and unparalleled triumph.

When you've reached the point of "Being" a high-performing business owner, you'll discern that your first imperative action is to engage a business coach. This strategic "Doing" will set the stage for you to ultimately "Have" a business that affords you the life you desire.
