You have to remember that the strength of a leader defines the success of a business. If you can conquer business challenges, your company will be unstoppable. Your team will look to you with inspiration and motivation. Every challenge you conquer empowers you and allows you to lead your team with vision and purpose.

Of all the business challenges that entrepreneurs struggle with, 3 issues are more common than the rest: team, time, and money.

I know that these challenges can feel frustrating and distracting. But here’s what I tell the business leaders that I’ve worked with in the past.

Every difficulty is an opportunity in the making. Since there’s no way to avoid these challenges, I encourage you to embrace them and treat them as a stepping stone to improve your skills.

In this article, you’ll understand more about these 3 business challenges and how these can compromise your business growth. You’ll learn how to conquer them so you can emerge as an empowered entrepreneur who can lead a team in tackling future challenges head-on.

Time

Time is a luxury given to everyone in equal measure. Still, it doesn’t make everyone successful. Do you want to know why?

We don’t always know how to manage time wisely. As a business leader, it’s to get pulled by the multiple tasks that we have before us. We go from one task to another and soon, we realise that it’s the end of the day and we failed to accomplish anything of significance.

If you want to be an empowered entrepreneur, you need to learn effective time management skills. It will allow you to accomplish more in less time - so every day has a significant impact on your business growth and success.

How can you hone your time management skills?

  • Prioritise tasks. List all tasks that you need to do for the day. You can choose to do this at the end of the day to prepare for the next or you can do this first thing in the morning. The goal of this activity is to identify the most important tasks so you can do them first. Get them done and out of the way so the high-impact activities are completed in time.

  • Use time blocks. These refer to chunks of time allotted for specific tasks. The point is to identify how long it’ll take to complete a task and set it in your schedule of activities for the day. Since people are wired differently, figure out when you’re most productive and creative. Block out that time for the high-impact tasks.

  • Delegate strategically. No matter how good you are, you can’t do everything. Trust your team and delegate tasks strategically. Choose the people who have the skills to complete the task efficiently. This will free you to focus on making decisions no one else can do.

  • Use technology. There are many tools to streamline processes and make you more productive. Automation can be used for repetitive tasks. Online calendars can sync everyone’s schedules. Project management tools can track tasks and issue deadlines to improve team collaboration and ensure a timely delivery. Use technology to save time and increase efficiency.

Team

Every member of your team is important. They are there because they contribute to the overall growth of the business. Having a collaborative team makes it easier to achieve success in the business. If your team is not unified, they can hold the business back. They’ll be prone to making mistakes, losing clients, missing opportunities and tarnishing the reputation of your company. This can also lead to a higher turnover rate - and that’s costly for businesses!

As the leader, you have the crucial role of bringing your team together. It’s up to you to get them to work in unity. You have to make each member feel valued so they’ll be empowered to contribute their best. With the right leadership, your team can increase sales and improve productivity.

How can you improve your team management skills?

  • Communicate freely. Encourage your team openly communicate their opinions and feelings. Don’t discourage negative comments. Welcome them because that will foster trust and transparency within the team. They’ll know that you value their voice and this will make them feel accepted and respected.

  • Define clear goals. Be very clear with your goals so your team will know what to do. This will align your expectations with their output and avoid misunderstanding. Document the goals so everyone is clear about the purpose of each task. Be clear about who is responsible for what has to be done.

  • Create opportunities to collaborate. This will encourage the team to rely on and respect each other’s skills. Encourage brainstorming sessions and team-building activities. Let different departments collaborate on projects without competing.

  • Recognise and reward efforts. Acknowledging good works and successful outputs to motivate your team to give each task their best. Recognise the contribution of each member and be appreciative of the effort exerted. This will create a supportive work environment that’s fueled by positive reinforcement.

Money

Cash is king, they say. It is considered to be the lifeblood of any business. If your business runs out of cash, it can compromise business operations. It’ll limit the growth of the business and can keep you from grabbing opportunities and working with talented individuals.

Money management is an important skill for business leaders because the way you handle the company finances is vital for business growth and sustainability. It doesn't matter if you are a startup or an established business. You face money challenges so you have to manage your finances properly by tracking the cash flow and budgeting for business growth. With proper financial planning, you can gauge the company’s capabilities and mitigate risks. This will allow you to make informed decisions to maximise growth opportunities for the business.

How can you develop money management skills?

  • Create a realistic budget. A budget outlines the income, expenses and financial goals of the business. It contains vital information about the finances of the business so you can spend and make financial decisions wisely. Make sure it’s followed and updated regularly. You should also set a meeting to discuss this with vital members of your team. They have to be updated when it comes to the financial standing of the business.

  • Track your cash flow. Use the budget to keep an eye on the cash flow to ensure that you have enough to cover the monthly expenses. Be meticulous about this so you can see where your investments go and which expenses are worth it and which ones should be halted. If necessary, hire professionals to help you manage your cash flow. Discuss it with your team so they can spend the funds allocated to them wisely.

  • Be wise with debt. Businesses have debts. It’s important to keep a tight lid on your debts and ensure that you’re meeting payment obligations. If you need to borrow for the business, make sure you have a plan for how you’ll pay it back. If it gets out of hand, explore options to refinance or consolidate debt to lower the interest rate and leave room in your cash flow for payments.

  • Invest in growth. This does not just mean investing in new machines, equipment, etc. It also means investing in the growth of your team and products. Fund initiatives that lead to long-term growth like product development, employee training, marketing campaigns, etc.

None of the above? You might have this last issue...

While time, team and money management are skills that entrepreneurs should master, there’s another area that should be given attention - the entrepreneurial mindset. If you want to be an empowered entrepreneur, you have to possess the resilience and mindset to overcome setbacks - including internal obstacles.

Having a strong entrepreneurial mindset means you can face hurdles with confidence and you can stay focused even when everyone else is panicking. It means overcoming feelings of impostor syndrome, limiting beliefs, etc. It also means maintaining a calm and steady demeanour so it’ll resonate with the rest of the team and motivate them to keep moving forward.

How can you improve your entrepreneurial mindset?

  • Embrace the idea of failure. Just as challenges are opportunities in the making, failure can be a catalyst for success. Use it as a stepping stone that’ll redirect your path and teach you important lessons in business.

  • Be adaptable. It’s easy to stick to what’s familiar because we know that it worked in the past. But you have to realise that as your business grows, the needs and circumstances change as well. You have to adapt and take calculated risks to improve the business.

  • Prioritise your well-being. A healthy leader reflects positively on the business. Take care of your well-being and mental health so you can maintain clarity and focus despite trying times.

  • Find a mentor. Seek a mentor or business coach who can offer guidance, support and a new perspective on your journey. Surround yourself with like-minded people who will understand your views, goals and aspirations. These people can uplift your mind, body and spirit so you can feel refreshed and ready to take on the challenges in your business.

The journey of an empowered entrepreneur involves overcoming challenges repeatedly. It’s not a one-time thing that you’ll do. It’s also not something that you only have to face at the start of the business. It’s a process that you have to deal with.
